Acts of Sedition/Bafabegiya
Split Spacement Records
Rating: 5/5

This split 12" LP starts off with Bafabegiya, a hardcore punk rock band from Reno, Nevada who have released quite a few records in the past couple years, including splits with Arabella and Greyskull (Tacoma, Washington). Singer Joe runs Spacement Records out of Reno and this time around his band decided to do a split with Oakland, California punk rock band Acts of Sedition.
Let's start with Bafabegiya. The band's side of the LP begins with an acoustic guitar intro, which is not something the band has done before, and I have to say that it was really a nice touch. That lasts about 30 seconds and then Joe's signature scream comes in with the first line, "Molded by human hands." After that, things are about the same as previous Bafabegiya releases, only with much better production this time around. There's a lot more gang vocals, and the guitar and bass seem to have more parts that stand out, rather than just playing along in the background. Justin's guitarwork is a bit simple for Bafabegiya, but I assure you that the guy can really rock out when he wants to. Tim's bass is a lot more prominent this time around and he has a few really sweet bass riffs thrown in on this record that I admire a lot.
Lyrically, Joe seems to be maturing a lot. He still writes about social and political issues, but he is including personal topics in his lyrics these days, too.
Overall, there a ton of good sing along parts on here (my favorite being "Punk Rock Saved My Life") and I just can't emphasize how great this band has become. I've been listening to Bafabegiya's side of this record religiously for the past couple weeks.
Acts of Sedition waste no time greeting the listener. They open up with some screams and a distorted guitar. This 3-piece Oakland punk rock band are not melodic or soft. They definitely pack a punch with their fast tempos, superb drumming, constant screaming, and really catchy chord progressions. Hell, they even experiment with some really strange bass effects.
There's not a ton to say about this band. They don't really mix things up too much. Every song sounds about the same as the last. I'm not saying the band is horrible, because I really enjoy them, but I've said all I can. |
