Interview by Dustin
I got the opportunity to do an email interview with Wes Eisold of Some Girls and Give Up the Ghost (RIP). This is part 1 of 2 of this interview.
What was the reason for Rob leaving the band this fall? Any hard feelings or are you guys still friends?
Rob had to leave because he's a busy person. He moved to Seattle and unfortunately he couldn't play in SGs anymore. Of course there are no hard feelings. If someone has hard feelings with Rob Moran they are cracked. He is the best.
What made you decide to make Some Girls your main band? I was never a huge fan of AN/GUTG, but I did enjoy your music. I was stunned to hear that GUTG broke up and that Some Girls would be your main project. I'm kind of happy it did happen that way though, because I personally favor Some Girls.
It wasn't a concious decision to shift the weight from a priority to another or anything. I had quit AN/GUTG and was already living in San Diego, so naturally more time was devoted to the relevance.
Do you guys have a replacement guitarist yet to take Rob's place?
Yeah this guy Nathan.
I notice a huge change from all of your previous stuff to "Heaven's Pregnant Teens". What direction did you guys aim to go for with this record? It's still brutal as hell, but it seems a little less raw than your older releases.
The only thing less raw about it is that we didn't record it in our practice space like we did with all of our other records. The songs are better and different because we had time to devote to them. That's the only major difference I feel.
You are known for having some of the best lyrics in this scene today. What inspires your lyrics?
The life I lead and those led by others. I have unresolved differences and cockeyed annoyances. Plus the repercussions of staying alive. But never the scene.
I know you have an upcoming book entitled "Death Beds" that's going to be released by Icarus/Deathwish. What sort of writings are you going to have in this book? Do you have a known release date yet for this?
It is a collection of all the lyrical content I've written to date, accompanied by other poems and rants. There is not a release date yet. It has gotten much closer however. It's just that I keep pulling it to add more or edit, or delete even.
What's been playing in your iPod/stereo/turntable/whatever lately?
I believe in vinyl. I'm in the process of moving and my soundtrack for bad includes perhaps exclusively/inclusively, television personalities, beat happening, newest Kites LP, Swell Maps and Daniel Johnston.
How do you feel about the current punk/hardcore scene (eg. "fashioncore", guys dressing like girls, dime-a-dozen metalcore bands, etc.)?
I don't feel enough to even comment on it. The readers of this interview, you, and me should already have a combined and mutual understanding of things that obvious. Birds use wings to fly, if it is too loud you are too old, and the fad you've described is silly.
Do you get a lot of shit from old American Nightmare/Give Up the Ghost fans about moving on to Some Girls?
The bands co-existed for a brief time and I don't think people really digged it then, a few did/do. I'm quite comfortable having a different listening audience. People treat you as if you've signed a contract. I forged it, that was the first band I ever did and now it is done. I don't see what the issue is.
What's it like seeing limited vinyl of yours on eBay going for over 30 dollars sometimes?
I don't know. I've seen AN vinyl go for around $500 so $30 doesn't weird me out. I'll pay $30 for a record I really want sometimes. Things just get crucial some days.
