Alright, so I’m going to see Mastodon, Converge, and The Bronx on September 29th. I’m going for Converge, but I heard the new Mastodon on MySpace recently and was blown away. I decided I would wait until the show to buy the new Mastodon record, “Blood Mountain.” Well, I couldn’t really wait that long.

I bought The Mars Volta’s “Frances The Mute” a couple years ago when it came out and got bored with it in a couple weeks, but I heard that their new record, “Amputechture,” was going to be really good. So, I picked it up the day it came out at Best Buy for ten dollars. When I was there, I saw Mastodon’s new record right next to it, but I told myself I would wait until the show to buy that one.

A couple days later, I thought to myself, “Why wait till the show? The album will be ten dollars at the show, but it’s also ten dollars at Best Buy since it’s a new release right now.” I went to Best Buy and bought the Mastodon CD that day.

So how are the new albums? The Mastodon CD has some of the coolest metal musicianship I’ve heard in a while. The vocals have a very wide range. It’s just a great metal record from start to finish. The Mastodon CD is just boring. Seventeen-minute songs? You have to listen to ten minutes of random, bland crap just to get to some good music. I gave it a chance by listening to it a few times, but I just can’t get into it.

One good record, one not-so-good. Oh well.

About a month or two ago, I saw a film titled A Scanner Darkly. The film was based on a science fiction novel by the same name, written by a 20th century author named Philip K. Dick. Now, I have never read the book, but I didn’t enjoy the film, so I don’t plan on reading the book. Does that make me an asshole? Probably. Anyway, this band is named after the book, and they are completely influenced by Dick’s work, especially lyrically. Everything they write has to do with his writing, which is pretty interesting. I mean, if you’re going to do something artistic, like make music, you should have something to strive for and you need a theme or a message to convey.

A Scanner Darkly (the band) are a rather strange sort of drone/metal/grind band. They combine screaming (duh) with lots of blast beats and heavy guitar riffage, but they also have some mellow, ambient (if you can even call it that) parts, like on “Four Years, False Memories,” which is just over 9 minutes of strange sounds compiled together. But, for the most part, ASD are your run of the mill grind/metal band, drawing influence from bands like Pig Destroyer (apparently they cover Pig Destroyer live) and the Melvins.

If you like your metal heavy and technical, A Scanner Darkly might do it for you. I can’t really picture myself listening to this one too many times after this, but I can imagine some folks getting really into this CD for various reasons. ASD are very talented and I think we’re going to hear more from this band eventually.

Okay, that may sound really stupid, but this EP sucks anyway, so I don’t really care. “Infinite Jest” is five tracks of really annoying dance-driven pop with some nauseating vocals to top things off. The lyrics are stupid, the music is really bland and repetitive, and the CD layout is extremely plain and quite stupid. It just depicts some girl pulling up some stalkings on her legs. Fascinating. Thanks We Are The Fury. You just wasted 18 minutes of my time.

Holy shit. When I first checked out the cover art on this CD I thought I was in for something really horrible. It just didn’t appeal to my eyes I guess, and that made Intronaut’s debut EP, Null, look like something I wouldn’t really care for. But you can’t judge a book by its cover, so I listened to this CD over and over again and was simply amazed by how dynamic it is for just a 5-song EP that was originally recorded just for a couple hundred CD-Rs. This release is definitely a great way to start off a career as a band.

So what’s it like? Well, the intro track starts off with one note that gradually becomes higher and higher, and then the first real song explodes out of your speakers. The guitarwork is very tricky, blending heaviness with lots of melody and some extremely catchy metal riffs. Afterall, Intronaut are a metal band. There’s no question about that. The guitarists write original sounding music and they do a damn good job at it. You’ll find yourself getting drawn into a lot of the great riffs that guitarists Sacha Dunable and Leon Del Muerte write. I can’t really think of anything else to say about the guitars.

The screams are really raw and are very well-placed throughout the whole CD, not overdoing it like a lot of bands in this particular genre of music.

The rhythm section of this band is extremely tight. The drummer, Danny Walker, is an ace behind the kit. The bassist, Joe Lester, is apparently a jazz/funk bassist, and it really shows on the songs here. His addition to the band is crucial, throwing in some really jazzy riffs all over the place to spice things up on Null.

Overall, this is just an amazing metal EP. I’m in love with it. I am about to put it on my iPod right now, actually. The mix of heavy and slow, ambient type stuff is just great. It’s refreshing to hear bands like this every once in a while. Goodfellow Records has done it again.

Anyway, I’m excited in a weird way. I haven’t been in a classroom in almost 3 years due to homeschooling. Hopefully I’ll meet some cool people. I’m just worried I won’t be able to concentrate because my mind wanders quite often. We’ll just have to see what happens I guess.

I am not prepared at all. I should go buy some paper and shit at Office Depot later today because right now I have maybe 50 sheets of paper and 2 folders leftover from the 11th grade. I’m lagging.
