Two new releases
Alright, so I’m going to see Mastodon, Converge, and The Bronx on September 29th. I’m going for Converge, but I heard the new Mastodon on MySpace recently and was blown away. I decided I would wait until the show to buy the new Mastodon record, “Blood Mountain.” Well, I couldn’t really wait that long.
I bought The Mars Volta’s “Frances The Mute” a couple years ago when it came out and got bored with it in a couple weeks, but I heard that their new record, “Amputechture,” was going to be really good. So, I picked it up the day it came out at Best Buy for ten dollars. When I was there, I saw Mastodon’s new record right next to it, but I told myself I would wait until the show to buy that one.
A couple days later, I thought to myself, “Why wait till the show? The album will be ten dollars at the show, but it’s also ten dollars at Best Buy since it’s a new release right now.” I went to Best Buy and bought the Mastodon CD that day.
So how are the new albums? The Mastodon CD has some of the coolest metal musicianship I’ve heard in a while. The vocals have a very wide range. It’s just a great metal record from start to finish. The Mastodon CD is just boring. Seventeen-minute songs? You have to listen to ten minutes of random, bland crap just to get to some good music. I gave it a chance by listening to it a few times, but I just can’t get into it.
One good record, one not-so-good. Oh well.
