Up and Down, Down, Down
I received Trapdoor Fucking Exit’s CD, “Crooked Life / Straight World”, from No Idea Records quite a while ago, but I’ve been lazy so I haven’t gotten around to reviewing the album until now. The record bored me at first, but just recently caught my attention and got me a bit hooked, and I just realized that this band is from Sweden, which is probably why this band is so good. Sweden just churns out great artists one after another. As for the style of music this band plays, I’m lost, but I guess I’ll try to describe TFE’s sound right now.
Musically, TFE vary between a heavy, dark punk sound and a lighter, more poppy rock sound. The vocals are really raspy (this seems to be very common amongst No Idea bands) and the music supports the vocals just perfectly. Most of the darker punk stuff on “Crooked Life” is mainly strumming, but there’s also a lot of intricate picking on the album to level things out and make a much more solid record, rather than just doing the whole three-chord punk thing that a lot of bands on No Idea’s roster are doing these days.
Overall, this is just a great, catchy record that has some fucking outstanding riffs that I can’t get out of my head.
