Boysetsfire disappoint once again

Boysetsfire - Before The EulogyI am not a Boysetsfire fan. In fact, I hate the band at this point after having to sit through a couple of their previous releases. Before The Eulogy: Reissues, Odds and Ends, Rarities is a twenty-track record that compiles BSF’s b-sides and rare tracks from throughout their career as a band. This obviously means poor quality music and a lot of horrible songs that got left behind years ago. Now imagine that… BSF are already not so great in my book, and this record is a bunch of a not-so-good band’s not-so-good tracks. Now do you understand where I’m coming from?

Here is a little bit of information from the Equal Vision Records website about the tracklisting:

Includes their first demo (tracks 1-4), second demo Premonition.Change.Revolt (tracks 5-7), the Consider 7″ (tracks 8 & 9), In Chrysalis EP (tracks 10-14), Suckerpunch Training EP (tracks 15 & 16), and a few assorted rarities (tracks 17-20).

Now if you’ve never heard Boysetsfire, here’s a little summary of what they sound like: lots of really horrible “singing” that is more like talking laced with some pitiful screams and unenergetic backup vocals, a lot of melodic music that resembles At The Drive-In a lot (not nearly as talented as ATDI though) that switches to heavier, distorted music and then back again to the melodies over and over again. The band tries to mix hardcore with melody, but it just ends up sounding like alternative rock sometimes. The song structures are way too predictable… verse, chorus, bridge, verse, chorus, verse, etc. They don’t try anything new, and it bugs the hell out of me.
